As of September, 2024 there are 2,162 incarcerated individuals who have served 25 or more years incarcerated and who are age 55 or older. Many of our 23 State Correctional prisons were over capacity at the end of September 2024

Notably, Laurel Highlands is a facility most capable of managing seriously ill or aging prisoners was at 134.7% capacity! Laurel Highlands has both general population incarcerated persons as well as medical facilities and dialysis for male incarcerated persons.

SCI Waymart was at 135.8% capacity as of September 2024. SCI Waymart was originally Fairview State Mental Hospital. While Waymart holds general population, it has the Department of Corrections Forensic Treatment Center which houses mentally disabled male incarcerated persons who require psychiatric care and treatment.
